FLOSSInclude website.
FLOSS(Free/Libre/OpenSourceSoftware) is arguably one of the best examples of open, collaborative, internationally distributed production and development. FLOSS provides numerous benefits for developing countries, such as low cost, adaptability, and a free-of-charge high quality training environment, as shown by the FP6 FLOSSWORLD study. The FLOSSInclude project aims to strengthen Europe's participation in international research in FLOSS and open standards, by studying what is needed to increase the deployment, development and societal impact of FLOSS in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
The project will result in a sound understanding of the FLOSS-related needs of the target regions. It will federate local and regional development initiatives with the support of cooperation with current EU research. It will also provide a roadmap for future EU research cooperation in this area.
To achieve these objectives, the FLOSSInclude project will perform five core tasks:
- Analysis of available data to identify key problem areas and areas of blocked potential for FLOSS in the target regionsDissemination and networking, to identify and federate local and regional initiatives
- Requirements analysis, to show with concrete cases the specific technical, business and socio-political needs for the growth of FLOSS use, deployment and development in target regions
- Validation and pilots, to ensure that FLOSS solutions, tools and services can be cost-effective and practical
- Prepare a cooperation roadmap, supported by regional initiatives, concrete cases for clearly identified requirements, with solution areas proposed that have been validated through pilots.
Validated pilots and a coordinated roadmap for future EU development research cooperation will ensure that the impact of FLOSSInclude will be sustained far beyond the duration of the project.

Training in Computer Aided Learning in Karnataka, India
- Approximately 150 government staff to be trained and certified as 'Master Trainers'. The training will ultimately cascade down into 1010 'Block Master Trainers' and 8000 teachers.

FLOSSINCLUDE FINAL WORKSHOP (7-8, June. Brussels)
- The FlossInclude team celebrate the final workshop of the project in Brussels on 7 and 8 of June. All the partners, coordinators and team of the European Commission will attend the event. The event will take place on Casa de Asturias (Rue sain Laurent, 36) at 10.00, monday 7 of June. The workshop can be attended 'free of charge' and everyone interested in this subject area is welcome. Groups in eleven EU member states participate in Document Freedom Day
- In at least eleven EU member states, groups promoting the use of open standards and open source software, are preparing for Document Freedom Day, 31 March. With workshops, presentations and demonstrations, they aim to make computer users aware of open formats for electronic documents. Many groups will focus on public administrations and governments.

South India Regional workshop on 'Software Principles for the Public Sector, with focus on Public Education' on 1st and 2nd February, 2010 in Bangalore
- UNESCO, e-Governance Department, Government of Karnataka, Department of Primary and Secondary Education and Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan, Government of Karnataka, Karnataka Jnana Aayoga (Karnataka Knowledge Commission) and IT for Change (ITfC), are co-organising a workshop “Software Principles for the Public Sector, with focus on Public Education” on the 1st and 2nd February, 2010 in Bangalore. Workshop objectives: The objectives of this workshop include: 1.Contribute to a better understanding of how the specific contexts and vision/ethos of the public sector, including principles of universal access, participation, transparency and social justice would inform the architecture and design of software for the public sector. 2.Share experiences and lessons in “public sector software” development and implementation programs in southern states of India and highlight potential areas and challenges .
